With a population of 145,803, Joliet is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Its current housing statistics show an increase of 1,400 homes per year. Located 40 miles southwest of Chicago in Will County, Joliet is a significant transportation hub.

Millions of people visit Joliet each year to visit its casinos, NASCAR races, NHRA drag strip, its baseball stadium, water park, libraries and museums. Its Rialto Theatre — the “Jewel of Joliet” — has been called one of the world's 10 most beautiful theatres and was featured in the film “Stir of Echoes” starring Kevin Bacon. It was also a favorite haunt of Al Capone.

Now closed, the famous Joliet Prison — the location for the television series “Prison Break” — is located near the city’s downtown area. Also located in downtown Joliet is the historic Auditorium Building. Designed by G. Julian Barnes and built of limestone in 1891, it was controversial as one of the first buildings to combine religious, civic, and commercial uses. Built to replace St. John's Universalist Church, the upstairs sanctuary doubled as a civic auditorium; and the congregation leased space to businesses on the lower level. Having since sold the Auditorium Building, the congregation today survives as the Universalist Unitarian Church of Joliet, however, the sanctuary of Auditorium Building has been converted into upscale condominiums.

The median household income in Joliet is $47,761.
