With neighboring Murrieta, Temecula forms the southwestern anchor of the Inland Empire region. It is almost equidistant to San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange counties and many consider it a suburb of the latter. Temecula is also home to many military families from nearby Camp Pendleton USMC, Miramar MCAS, March Air Reserve Base and the Navy bases in San Diego.

Due to the rapid growth of the city, Temecula has experienced severe traffic conditions in the area.

Temecula is the site of one of the oldest wineries in California, and the Temecula Valley continues to be a small but significant wine production center, supporting nineteen wineries.
