Levittown is a town in Nassau County 24 miles east of New York City. The town has a total population of 53,067 residents and a median household income of $73,923.
Levittown gets its name from its developer and builder, William Levitt, whose firm Levitt & Sons, Inc., built the planned community in 1947. It was built on what used to be potato farms in an area known as Island Trees. Initially, Levitt and Sons built 2,000 mass-produced rental homes for veterans on their Island Trees land. Their production line technique used to build this new development was so successful that they were turning out 30 houses a day. Almost immediately, all 2,000 homes were rented to veterans and their families, so Levitt & Sons decided to build an additional 4,000 houses.
In 1949, Levitt & Sons discontinued building rental houses and turned their attention to building larger, more modern homes, which they called "ranch" homes and which they sold for $7,990. By 1951, Levitt & Sons had constructed 17,447 homes in Levittown and the immediate surrounding areas.
