After you have found foreclosures that you are interested in, it is always a good idea to drive by the target property to see what kind of condition it is in and to determine what the neighborhood is like.
Getting Access to the Property.
One thing to always keep in mind is that although you cannot officially have a viewing of the home, you would be surprised at how often a willing owner will allow you to access the property. This is key.
Check out the neighborhood.
You should check out and carefully assess the neighborhood. Remember, it doesn't matter how good the property looks from the outside, you’re in for problems if it is located in a neighborhood that is not marketable.
Assess noise and hazard factors.
Also, check for things like railroad tracks. Most buyers will be reluctant to choose a home near tracks due to safety and noise factors.
Other important factors to look for.
Even if you can’t get a look inside the foreclosed property, drive by and look it over. Is the lawn well kept? Are there pets on the property? Is the outside of the house in good shape?
About Abandoned Properties.
On the other hand, many times the house has already been abandoned, so you can very likely get a view of the inside of the house through the windows. Another great way to gather information is by approaching a chatty neighbor to start up a conversation. You'll be amazed at how much useful information a neighbor is willing to give up.
