How the Buy-or-Rent Balance is Shifting

This interactive visualization of a recent RealtyTrac buy-rent analysis shows whether it’s more affordable to buy or rent in 285 counties nationwide in 2015 — and how that compares to the buy-or-rent equation in the past three years.  The buy-or-rent balance is clearly shifting away from buying and toward renting as home prices rise faster than rents.

In 2012 65 percent of the population lived in counties where it was more affordable to buy or rent, but that shrunk to 58 percent in favor of buying in 2013, and 56 percent in favor of buying in 2014 before dropping to 54 percent in favor of buying of 2015.
