KANSAS FORECLOSURES INCREASE 7 PERCENT IN MAY

ACCORDING TO REALTYTRAC™ U.S. FORECLOSURE MARKET REPORT

 

Activity Up 6 Percent From a Year Earlier

 

IRVINE, Calif. – June 15, 2007 – Kansas reported 433 foreclosure filings in May, a 7 percent increase in activity from the previous month, and a 6 percent increase from May 2006, according to the latest RealtyTrac™ U.S. Foreclosure Market Report.

“Even though Kansas has added 30,500 jobs over the past year, according to the Kansas Department of Labor, the state is still seeing a marked increase in foreclosure activity,” said James J. Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac.

 

Kansas ranked 34th in the country in total foreclosures reported for May. The state posted the 36th highest foreclosure rate in the country for the month — one foreclosure filing for every 2,605 households.

 

Two counties accounted for more than half of states activity

Foreclosure filings in two Kansas counties accounted for 55 percent of all foreclosure activity in the state for May. Wyandotte County documented the highest foreclosure total, reporting 124 foreclosure filings for the month. Sedgwick County documented the second highest foreclosure total, reporting 114 foreclosure filings. Johnson County documented the third highest foreclosure total, with 99 foreclosure filings.

 

Wyandotte County leads state in foreclosure rate for the month

Wyandotte County posted the highest foreclosure rate in the state for May, with one foreclosure filing for every 531 households — 4.9 times the state average and 1.2 times the national average. Leavenworth County tallied the state’s second highest foreclosure rate, with one foreclosure filing for every 871 households — 3 times the state average. Sedgwick County posted the third highest foreclosure rate, with one foreclosure filing for every 1,677 households — 1.6 times the state average.

 

State makes small contribution to national total for May

Total foreclosure filings in Kansas accounted for less than 1 percent of the 176,137 foreclosure filings nationwide in May. The national total was up 19 percent from the previous month, and up 90 percent from May 2006. The nation’s foreclosure rate increased to one foreclosure filing for every 656 U.S. households during the month.
