IOWA FORECLOSURE ACTIVITY DECREASES 13 PERCENT IN OCTOBER

Yearly Foreclosure Total Up 65 Percent From October 2006

 

IRVINE, Calif. – Nov. 26, 2007 – Iowa reported 673 foreclosure filings in October, a 13 percent decrease from the previous month, but still a 65 percent increase from October 2006, according to the latest RealtyTrac® U.S. Foreclosure Market Report.

“Although Iowa foreclosures have increased since this time last year, they appear to be headed downward in October,” said James J. Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac. “Statistics show that the state’s unemployment rate is currently below the national average and that its home price appreciation rate was above the national average over the past year. If these trends continue, we may see foreclosures continue to decline here.”

 

Iowa ranked 32nd in the country in total foreclosure filings for the month. The state’s foreclosure rate of one foreclosure filing for every 1,942 households ranked it 34th among the 50 states.

 

Polk County leads state in foreclosure activity

Polk County reported 261 foreclosure filings, the most of any county for the month. Scott County posted the second highest foreclosure total, with 64 foreclosure filings for the month, followed by Linn County with 54 foreclosure filings.

 

Union County posts highest foreclosure rate

Union County reported the highest foreclosure rate in Iowa for October, with one foreclosure filing for every 643 households — three times the state average. Warren County posted the second highest foreclosure rate, with one foreclosure filing for every 669 households — 2.9 times the state average. Polk County posted the third highest foreclosure rate, with one foreclosure filing for every 677 households — 2.9 times the state average.

 

State makes minor contribution to national total

Total foreclosure filings in Iowa accounted for less than 1 percent of the 224,451 foreclosure filings nationwide in October. The national total represents a 2 percent increase from the previous month and is still 94 percent above the total reported for October 2006. The nation’s foreclosure rate is one foreclosure filing for every 555 U.S. households for the month.
