Democratic Districts Highest in Foreclosure Rate for 2011

Six out of the top 10 congressional districts with the highest foreclosure rates in the nation during 2011 were led by Democratic lawmakers, according to data analyzed in March 2012 for RealtyTrac’s Foreclosure News Report.

With 6.29 percent of its housing units having a foreclosure filing in 2011, Nevada’s 1st District led by Rep. Shelley Berkley was the Democratically-led district with the highest foreclosure rate in the nation’s top 10, ranking second overall.

However, the district with the highest foreclosure rate in the nation last year (7.01 percent of its housing units with foreclosure filings) was Republican Congressman Joe Heck’s 3rd District in Nevada. This should not really surprise anybody considering that it was also the district that had the highest level of foreclosure activity in the nation for the year in 2011.

The remaining Democratic congressional districts with high foreclosure rates included Arizona’s  4th District led by Rep. Ed Pastor (4.85 percent of its housing units with a foreclosure filing), California’s 18th District represented by Rep. Dennis Cardoza (4.63 percent of its housing units had a foreclosure filing), Rep. Joe Baca’s 43rd District (4.57 percent of its housing units with a foreclosure filing),  California’s 7th District led by Rep. Robert Woodall (4.46 percent of its housing units with a foreclosure filing), and Georgia’s 13th District, represented by Rep. David Scott (4.41 percent of its housing units had a foreclosure filing last year).

Three other Republican-led districts made it in the nation’s top 10 for the highest foreclosure rate. California’s 25th District led by Buck McKeon came in third highest at a rate of 5.35 percent of its housing units with a foreclosure filing. California’s 44th District led by Rep. Ken Calvert came in ninth at a rate of 4.29 percent of its housing units with a foreclosure filing. Rounding out the top 10 was California’s 41st District led by Congressman Jerry Lewis which posted a rate of 4.28 of its housing units with a foreclosure filing.

Nationwide, all Democratically-led districts combined had a foreclosure rate of 1.35 of their housing units with a foreclosure filing in 2011. Republican-led districts combined had a rate of 1.26 of their housing units with a foreclosure filing for the year.
