Boom: Large Counties with Low Unemployment

Unemployment in the United States has been dropping incrementally for several years, with The Wall Street Journal currently forecasting it will drop from the 5.6 percent posted in December 2014 to 5.2 percent by the end of this year.

How that plays out in housing markets across the country can be seen in RealtyTrac’s latest dataset. It ranks counties with populations of 100,000 or more by unemployment rate, based on the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Of the 579 U.S. counties tallied, the lowest unemployment rates remain in country’s midsection from Bonneville, Idaho (2.8 percent), Cass, North Dakota (2.4 percent) and Olmstead, Minnesota (2.7 percent), through Minnehaha, South Dakota (2.5 percent), Lancaster and Sarpy, Nebraska (2.4 and 2.8 percent, respectively), Johnson, Iowa (2.7 percent), and Cache, Utah (2.7 percent), all the way to Midland, Texas (2.45 percent).

The other county in the top ten is Chittenden, Vermont at 2.8 percent.

This holds true throughout the top 25, with only one more New England county, Merrimack, New Hampshire (3.2 percent), among the central states.
