Replace an Oven Element

A watched pot never boils and an oven with a faulty element never cooks anything. Pulling yourself away from that pot may be difficult but with these simple instructions replacing an oven element is a snap. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Tools & Materials

  • Screwdriver
  • Nut driver
  • Proper oven element

Remove and Replace the Element

  1. First identify the oven manufacturer and the oven model number or the part number on the element. The packaging on the new element will list the manufacturers, model numbers and part numbers for which it serves as a replacement.
  2. Turn off the power to the oven at the breaker box and unplug the oven.
  3. Remove the screws that secure the element to the oven. Pull the element four to five inches away from the back wall of the oven.
  4. Remove the screws that hold the wires to the prongs on the element. Note the way that the wires are attached and be sure to reattach them the same way.
  5. Install the new oven element, attaching they wires as they were before and securing the new element to the back wall of the oven.
  6. Plug the oven back in and return the breaker back to the on position.
  7. Test the oven. There may be a little smoke when the new element first heats up, don't worry it's just the factory coating burning off.
